The Criterion Collection’s November 2012 Release Slate!

#631 - 635 ”THE TRILOGY OF LIFE” (dir. Pier Paolo Pasolini) 1971-1974

Arabian Nights, The Canterbury Tales, and The Decameron as only Pasolini could conceive of them… in one heaving box set, Criterion has collected an orgy of the lustiest, most boldly primal anthologies the cinema has ever known. this is 2012’s big-ticket holiday item. that thanksgiving dinner with your family is going to be extra twisted, this year.

#635 WEEK END (dir. Jean-Luc Godard) 1965

long-time readers of this site will know that i’ve bourgeoiswanted this for a long, long time, although the real treasure here — given that the film is already widely available in HD — might be Phillippe Garrel’s footage from the set. fin du blurb.

#636 HEAVEN’S GATE (dir. Michael Cimino) 1980

misunderstood masterpiece? an emblem of artistic pride and studio excess? regardless of how you might feel about Cimino’s beleaguered epic, there’s no denying that Heaven’s Gate isn’t one of recent Hollywood’s formative sagas, as important to the fabric of this industry as any film of the last 40 years. Criterion will naturally be providing Heaven’s Gate with the home it deserves, but history, it appears, will only have access to Cimino’s 216-minute director’s cut, as Criterion has not included the theatrical version.

#138 RASHOMON (dir. Akira Kurosawa) 1950

Criterion gives one of their flagship titles an inevitable HD boost, sprucing it up with fancy (if expected) new artwork.

Homer: “I don’t want to go to Japan!”

Marge: “Sure you do — you loved Rashomon!”

Homer: “That’s not the way I remember it.”

Eclipse Series #37: When Horror Came to Shochiku

if the words “GOKE, BODY SNATCHER FROM HELL” don’t do anything for you… they will.
